Traditionally ranked first among the Ten Great Grotto-Heavens (十大洞天) of Taoist sacred geography — the highest-ranked of the mountains believed to contain a hidden, paradisal interior realm accessible to worthy cultivators. Wangwushan's standing at the head of this list gives it an outsized place in Taoist cosmological texts relative to its more modest height and modern profile compared to Wudang or Taishan.

Tang-dynasty Taoist geographical texts, compiled by figures associated with the Shangqing tradition, ranked ten mountains across China as containing the most significant hidden interior realms — dongtian, or grotto-heavens — dimensions of extraordinary purity and harmony folded within the physical mountain, accessible to sufficiently cultivated practitioners through meditation, ritual, or simple good fortune. Wangwushan was placed first on this list, above even mountains more prominent in later popular memory, reflecting the mountain's particular reputation among the systematizers of Taoist sacred geography as a site of unusually concentrated auspicious qi.
