Mount Heng (Nanyue)
The Southern Peak, seat of the Lady of Nanyue
The Southern Peak (Nanyue) of the Five Great Mountains, not to be confused with the separate, unrelated Northern Peak that shares the English romanization "Heng" for a different Chinese character combination. Its principal temple, Nanyue Damiao, is one of the largest ancient religious complexes south of the Yangtze and is unusual for physically housing Buddhist and Taoist institutions side by side within one historic precinct. For Taoism specifically, the mountain's deeper significance lies with Wei Huacun, the semi-legendary 4th-century priestess venerated as the founding matriarch of the Shangqing school, who is said to have cultivated on Nanyue before her spirit later transmitted the Shangqing revelations to Yang Xi.

Wei Huacun and the roots of Shangqing Taoism
Before she became, in Shangqing tradition, the transcendent transmitter of the school's founding revelations, Wei Huacun is remembered as an unusually learned and devout woman of the Western Jin dynasty who pursued Taoist cultivation from an early age and is said to have withdrawn to Nanyue to deepen her practice. After her death, tradition holds that her perfected spirit — now ranking among the Shangqing pantheon's Perfected Beings — appeared to the young visionary Yang Xi decades later and transmitted, over a series of nocturnal revelations, the scriptures that would become the founding texts of the Shangqing school. She is venerated on the mountain today as the "Lady of Nanyue," her association giving this Southern Peak a distinct Shangqing identity even as its base temple, Nanyue Damiao, remains a shared Buddhist-Taoist precinct dedicated in its main hall to the God of the Southern Peak.
